A former Umzimkhulu municipal official has been rearrested in connection with the 2017 murder of ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.
The official, who previously faced charges in the politically charged case, was taken into custody this week and is expected to apply for bail before the KwaZulu-Natal High Court.
Magaqa, a former ANCYL secretary-general, was shot in July 2017 and later died from his injuries. His murder was widely believed to be linked to municipal corruption and infighting in the region.
Prosecutors say fresh evidence prompted the suspect’s rearrest. The state confirmed it would oppose bail.
“This matter has always been a priority, and we believe the new evidence strengthens the case,” said a National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson.
The case has dragged on for years, with several suspects charged and released, fuelling frustration among Magaqa’s supporters.
The bail application is set to be heard later this week.
