On 12 August 2025, elderly men and women showcased their energy and joy during fitness activities at Mputhumi Mafumbatha Stadium. The event formed part of a partnership between the Department of Social Development, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, and the Department of Sport, aimed at encouraging residents aged 60 and above to stay active and healthy.

The initiative also aims to strengthen community bonds and connect senior citizens with available local services across different wards under the municipality. Lubabalo Makhedama, representing the Department of Social Development, spoke about the importance of the Golden Games, highlighting that regular physical activity is vital for maintaining the health of older persons.

Executive Mayor Cllr. T.D. Mafumbatha thanked all attendees, saying, “This event shows our commitment to the health and dignity of our people, especially the elderly who have contributed greatly to building our communities. We hope these games will continue to promote unity, wellness, and mutual respect.”

One participant, MaDlamini, expressed her happiness, saying the day made them feel young again and praised the government for organising such an event.
