The Economic Freedom Fighters in the Eastern Cape have condemned ongoing home demolitions in Ward 31, affecting residents of Bompini and the Julius Malema Settlement. The statement, issued on 18 November 2025, raised alarm over the destruction of brick houses that families built over many years. EFF leaders will visit the area on 19 November 2025 to meet affected residents and assess the impact.
What Happened
Demolitions in Ward 31 have left families in Bompini and the Julius Malema Settlement without homes. According to the EFF, most of the destroyed structures are brick houses built through years of sacrifice and limited resources. The party argues that the demolitions rob residents of stability, dignity and a sense of permanence.
Official Response
The EFF Eastern Cape strongly condemned the demolitions, calling them a violation of constitutional rights.
“We reiterate our full support to the affected community and strongly believe the ongoing demolitions violate residents’ constitutional rights to shelter, dignity, and security,” the party said.
The statement also criticised the government’s handling of the situation. It argued that demolishing homes without offering alternatives or engaging communities “shows a deeply inhumane and anti-poor position that cannot be allowed to continue.”
EFF Provincial Leadership, joined by public representatives from the BCMM and the Provincial Legislature, will visit Ward 31 on 19 November 2025 at 08:00 in Bhongweni (Ward 31). The party says the visit aims to assess the situation and show solidarity with affected families.
Community Impact
The demolitions have left residents facing severe uncertainty. Families who invested their savings in brick homes now struggle with the loss of shelter and security. The EFF says it will continue supporting the community and pushing for accountability.
