At least 70 children have died from malnutrition in the Eastern Cape, South Africa’s poorest province, with warnings that more deaths could occur if urgent action is not taken. Therefore, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have blamed the ANC-led provincial government for failing to address the crisis.
What Happened
The Eastern Cape, home to over 880,000 people living in extreme poverty, is facing a severe hunger crisis. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) confirmed that 70 children have already died from malnutrition. Without immediate interventions, the number of deaths is expected to rise sharply in the coming financial year.
However, despite repeated requests, Premier Oscar Mabuyane initially refused to appear before the SAHRC, eventually being Summoned. The Commission described this as “disgraceful” and indicative of the government’s disregard for constitutional accountability.

Official Response
The EFF has accused the provincial government of corruption and incompetence, calling for the immediate resignation of Premier Oscar Mabuyane, MEC for Social Development Bukiwe Fanta, and MEC for Health Ntandokazi Capa.
“This crisis is the direct result of failed leadership and corruption. Children are dying because those in power refuse to act with urgency,” said the party in a statement.
The EFF emphasised that hunger in the province is a man-made disaster, pointing to the absence of accountability and a comprehensive plan to address child malnutrition.

Community Impact
Additionally civil society and community leaders have expressed deep concern, stating that hunger strips children of their basic rights to life, dignity, and education. Many rural families depend on school feeding schemes, and when these programs fall short, children go hungry.
Parents across the province have voiced anger at government neglect. One mother from Lusikisiki said:
“We bury children while leaders argue. Hunger does not wait, and our government has failed us.”
