The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have taken legal action against the Finance Minister’s recent 4% fuel levy increase, appearing before the Western Cape High Court today to challenge what they describe as a “burden on the working class and the poor.”

In a media statement issued on 2 June 2025, the EFF argued that the fuel levy hike is economically unjust, unconstitutional, and exacerbates inequality by raising the cost of essential goods and services.

“This increase places an unjust burden on the working class and the poor, who are already reeling from rising costs of living, stagnant wages, and ongoing economic hardship,” the party said.

The EFF maintains that the levy deepens economic inequality and limits access to critical services by increasing transport and food prices. The party has committed to opposing the levy both in court and in Parliament, calling for the total scrapping of the increase.

“We will argue that the fuel levy increase must be scrapped in its entirety in the interest of economic justice and social equity,” the statement continued.

This legal action marks another high-profile challenge from the EFF as it positions itself as a defender of working-class interests amid South Africa’s rising cost-of-living crisis.
