The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for the immediate removal of Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, citing what it describes as his history of hateful and racist remarks. In a strongly worded statement, the party accused McKenzie of double standards in his approach to issues of prejudice.
The EFF referenced McKenzie’s recent outrage over derogatory comments made about Coloured people on the Open Chats podcast — where the hosts described them as “incestuous” and “crazy.” McKenzie opened a case against the podcasters and demanded a public apology.
While acknowledging his right to be offended by such remarks, the EFF argued that McKenzie’s own past comments undermine his moral and ethical authority to lead on matters of non-racialism and social cohesion.“It is hypocritical to demand accountability from others when one harbours the same hateful attitudes,” the statement read, adding that McKenzie’s continued tenure “erodes the credibility of the ministry and the principles it should uphold.”
The EFF urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to act swiftly, warning that retaining McKenzie in the portfolio would signal tolerance for prejudice at the highest levels of government.
