The Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA) joined communities across the world in observing World AIDS Day with a quiet but powerful candle-lighting ceremony. The event honoured people who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS and acknowledged families and communities still affected by the epidemic.
The candle was lit at the agency’s offices. Staff said the gesture symbolised remembrance, compassion and ongoing support for those living with HIV.
A call to fight stigma
ECRDA leaders said the commemoration served as a reminder of the work still needed to end stigma and discrimination. They encouraged communities to speak openly about HIV, support affected families and promote regular testing.
“World AIDS Day is not only about looking back,” one staff member said. “It is about strengthening awareness and standing with people who still need support today.”
Honouring lives and supporting families
The agency noted that many rural communities in the Eastern Cape continue to carry the emotional and social impact of HIV-related losses. Sunday’s ceremony recognised these families and reaffirmed ECRDA’s commitment to community-centred health education.
Staff members also stressed the importance of youth awareness programmes, access to treatment and safe spaces where people can seek help without fear.
Looking toward a healthier future
As candles burned, ECRDA emphasised hope, unity and shared responsibility. The agency said it will continue supporting community outreach campaigns that promote knowledge, prevention and healthier lifestyles.
“We honour those we lost,” the agency said. “But we also stand together for a future where every person is informed, supported and confident to seek help.”
