The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development hosted a certificate handover today at Nkululeko Community Hall in Barkly East. The event marked progress in the Sinovuyo Teen Parenting Programme, delivered across Joe Gqabi District. The programme trains parents, caregivers, and officials in positive parenting and safe discipline.
What Happened
The Department partnered with UNICEF and Clowns Without Borders South Africa to strengthen family support and sharpen the skills of Social Service Practitioners. Through this partnership, the Sinovuyo Teen Parenting Programme reached families across Walter Sisulu, Senqu, and Elundini local municipalities.
In total, 13 officials completed the training: 5 in Walter Sisulu, 6 in Senqu, and 2 in Elundini. Moreover, 96 family members took part in programme sessions aimed at promoting child well-being.
During the handover, MEC Bukiwe Fanta applauded the initiative. “The Sinovuyo Teen Parenting Programme is an important platform for encouraging positive parenting practices,” she said.
Official Response
Social Development leaders noted that the collaboration helps communities access safer disciplinary methods, stronger support networks, and improved family services. Officials also highlighted that the programme aligns with provincial goals to reduce violence and improve child welfare.
UNICEF and CWBSA representatives welcomed the turnout and emphasized continued support for community-based parenting models.
Community Impact
Families reported improved communication with teenagers, reduced conflict at home, and better access to social services. The skills gained also help caregivers respond to daily challenges with confidence and empathy.
Because the programme focuses on early intervention, communities expect stronger relationships and healthier home environments moving forward.
