The MEC for Eastern Cape Social Development Bukiwe Fanta launched the provincial 16 Days of Activism campaign at BB Zondani Hall in Makhanda on 20 November 2025. The event aligns with Orange Day, a global call to end gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). Residents gathered for a community-centred dialogue on violence, crime and social pressures affecting families.
What Happened
The programme opened with a powerful community discussion that allowed residents to speak openly about GBVF, substance abuse and rising crime in their neighbourhoods. Speakers emphasized everyday challenges faced by families and the urgent need for stronger support systems.
The dialogue created space for honest reflection and community-led solutions. Participants also shared personal experiences and called for more prevention programmes.
Official Response
The MEC said the campaign aims to mobilise communities and strengthen accountability. “We cannot end GBVF without community voices. This shows a renewed commitment to protect women, children and vulnerable groups,” the MEC told residents.
Government departments and civil society partners joined the session through Services on Wheels, an outreach platform that brings essential services directly to communities.
Residents accessed support ranging from psychosocial counselling and victim empowerment to SASSA assistance, health services, safety information and legal advice.
Community Impact
The outreach helped families receive immediate support and guidance. Many residents said the on-site assistance made it easier to report cases, seek help and understand available services.
