The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development launched its Festive Season Campaign Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 18 November at Hilton Hall in Maletswai. MEC Bukiwe Fanta led the event alongside SAPS and other partners. The campaign aims to curb rising substance abuse and drug activity during the holiday period.
What Happened
MEC Fanta addressed residents, warning that drug use and risky behaviour often spike during the festive season. She stressed the need for early intervention and strong community involvement.
“The festive period must not become a danger zone for our young people. We must act together,” Fanta said.
Furthermore, officials outlined awareness activities that will run across high-risk areas to discourage drug use and promote safe behaviour.
Official Response
The Department confirmed its partnership with SAPS to strengthen law enforcement and clamp down on drug trafficking networks. Police representatives also pledged increased visibility and coordinated operations throughout December.
A Social Development official added, “Working with SAPS gives us the muscle to protect communities and stop illegal drug activity before it spreads.” The campaign includes education drives, safety dialogues, and support services for affected families.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the initiative, noting that drug abuse continues to harm young people across Maletswai. The programme is expected to boost community awareness and encourage reporting of illegal drug sales.
Because the campaign combines law enforcement, prevention, and community action, locals hope it will reduce festive-season risks and improve safety.
