the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders met at the Joe Gqabi District Municipality on 3 November 2025, to address a complaint from the Basia clan and to prepare for the summer initiation season. The high-level session focused on improving safety, coordination, and cultural integrity during initiation practices.

What Happened?

The meeting, chaired by Chief Gwazinamba Matanzima, brought together traditional leaders, officials from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), and representatives from the Office of the Speaker in the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.
Discussions centered on persistent challenges faced during past initiation periods. Leaders underscored the importance of stronger collaboration among traditional councils, local authorities, and government departments to ensure a safe and respectful initiation season.

“We must protect the dignity of our culture while keeping our young initiates safe,” said Chief Matanzima. “That requires unity and accountability from every stakeholder.”
