Six small businesses from the Eastern Cape were selected to attend Grocery Innovations Canada (GIC) 2025, held on 28–29 October in Toronto. Backed by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), this trade mission helps small exporters expand into global markets.
The companies—mainly from Gqeberha and Macleantown—are eyeing Canada as a stable, high-income destination that values ethical, natural, and locally rooted products.
“Canada presents a rules-based market with growing demand for authentic, natural, and ethically sourced products,” said Linda Lubengu, ECDC’s Trade Promotion Specialist.
Which Eastern Cape companies took part
The selected businesses produce everything from sugar-free chocolates to high-quality wines and staple crops. Here’s a snapshot:
| Company | Location | Product Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Coti Chocolates | Gqeberha | Sugar-free chocolate, Halaal/Kosher certified |
| Spice Kit | Gqeberha | Spice blends and cooking kits |
| Rocha Natural | Gqeberha | Natural skincare and body products |
| Tio Ze | Gqeberha | Artisan sauces and traditional condiments |
| Lathitha Wines | Macleantown | Locally bottled wines with social impact |
| Nodayimani Investments | Macleantown | Staple crops: maize, beans, soy, sweet potatoes |
Each company used the opportunity to:
- Meet global buyers and distributors
- Test international market response
- Gain exposure and feedback
- Diversify beyond traditional export markets
Why this matters for the province
The food and beverage sector is a key employer and growth area for the Eastern Cape. ECDC says this mission supports long-term export diversification, rural upliftment, and brand building for emerging manufacturers.
“This is a crucial market access opportunity for local manufacturers,” added Lubengu.
In parallel, ECDC also led a 20-company delegation to the Engage Trade Africa Exhibition in Durban, aimed at boosting intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
