The Eastern Cape Department of Health hosted a powerful youth engagement event at Mthatha Stadium to encourage healthy lifestyles, informed choices, and responsible behavior among young people.
With hundreds in attendance, the event tackled crucial topics like safe sex, sexually transmitted infections, mental well-being, and the consequences of teenage pregnancy. Officials and community partners came together to offer guidance, services, and motivation to the province’s future leaders.
Ms. Dudu Jopi, Manager of Condoms and Key Populations at the Department of Health, opened with a call for action: “We fought for political freedom, now the youth must rise and fight for freedom through education, employment, and health.” She also addressed the stigma many face when seeking help at health facilities, urging young people to know their status and pursue both health and education without fear.
Sibongile from TBHIV Care/DREAMS highlighted the resources available through the “Lake of Hope” initiative, which supports youth with school and job applications, NSFAS funding assistance, and official documents from Home Affairs.
A youth group from Nkciyo Slovo GM, led by Mama Zukiswa Mfiki, delivered messages around personal safety, crime prevention, and wise decision-making. They reminded peers of the long-term impact of criminal records and the importance of steering clear of risky behavior.
Municipalities that supported the campaign included KSD, Nyandeni, O.R. Tambo, King Mhlontlo, Port St John’s, and Ingquza Hill. They were joined by the SAPS, Department of Education, and NGOs like One to One Africa, Aquity Innovations, and Youth Zone.
