Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has conveyed condolences to the Dumke family following the passing of former Springbok Women’s rugby captain Lusanda Dumke.
Dumke, who was born and raised in East London, passed away. She was a trailblazer in women’s rugby and the founder of the Lusanda Dumke Foundation.
On behalf of the provincial government and residents of the Eastern Cape, Mabuyane expressed deep sorrow. He described Dumke as a symbol of resilience, leadership, and service.
“Lusanda Dumke represented the very best of our province; resilient, principled, and driven by a desire to uplift others,” Mabuyane said.
A Leader on and off the Field
Dumke captained South Africa’s women’s rugby team at the highest level. She carried national pride onto local and international fields. Her leadership inspired many young athletes, especially women from disadvantaged communities.
She played with courage and humility. As a result, she became a respected figure within the rugby fraternity. However, her impact extended far beyond sport.
Commitment to Youth and Social Upliftment
Through the Lusanda Dumke Foundation, she worked to empower young people. Her focus remained on access to sport, discipline, and leadership development.
In addition, her work contributed to gender equality and the transformation of women’s sport in South Africa. Many young women credit her mentorship for opening doors once closed to them.
“Her passing is a great loss not only to her family and the rugby community, but to the Eastern Cape and South Africa as a whole,” Mabuyane added.
A Legacy That Endures
The Premier has urged the sporting community to honour Dumke’s legacy. He called on society to continue advancing the causes she championed.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government has pledged its support to the Dumke family during this period of mourning.
Details regarding memorial and funeral services will be shared in due course, in line with guidance from the family and the Lusanda Dumke Foundation.
