Between 13 and 19 October 2025, police in the Eastern Cape carried out 82,402 law enforcement actions. These led to the arrest of 978 suspects and the seizure of 20 illegal firearms across the province.
What Happened
In a coordinated crime reduction effort, the South African Police Service (SAPS) worked with government departments, private security, and other law enforcement agencies. Together, they launched 59 high-density operations under the ongoing #OperationShanela and #SaferFestiveSeason campaigns.
As a result, police made nearly 1,000 arrests during a week. These included individuals linked to violent crimes and illegal firearm possession.
Notably, 12 illegal firearms were recovered in the OR Tambo District, while six more were seized in the Nelson Mandela District. The remaining weapons came from smaller districts across the province.
Official Response
According to SAPS, these operations are part of their intensified festive-season strategy. By working closely with other agencies and private security, the police aim to increase visibility and disrupt criminal activity in high-risk areas.
SAPS stated that this joint approach reflects their ongoing commitment to public safety in the Eastern Cape.
Community Impact
The community has welcomed the outcome of these operations. In areas like OR Tambo and Nelson Mandela Bay, where gun violence is a serious concern, residents expressed relief.
