The Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) in the Eastern Cape is on high alert following warnings of disruptive rainfall issued by the South African Weather Services (SAWS). The warnings, which range between levels 2 and 6, have prompted heightened preparedness to prevent potential disasters, as announced by Cogta MEC Zolile Williams this morning.

MEC Williams stated that, in collaboration with Municipal Disaster Management Centres (MDMC), the province has raised its preparedness to the highest level. “All municipalities, particularly coastal ones, have activated their disaster readiness plans. Our municipalities are promptly informing us of any incidents in accordance with provincial response procedures. We stand ready to provide additional support, including access to schools, especially given the start of Matric exams,” he said.

Disaster teams are closely monitoring areas prone to flooding and are prepared to implement evacuation procedures if necessary. “We have ensured the availability of safe places and relief support through the relevant sector departments to assist municipalities,” added MEC Williams.

He called on all key stakeholders to play their part by reporting and addressing incidents and accidents promptly. “We also encourage our municipal leadership to remain visible in hotspot areas during this period to mitigate disasters and offer necessary support,” urged MEC Williams.

The Eastern Cape authorities remain vigilant as they brace for possible weather-related incidents, ensuring the safety of residents and the protection of critical infrastructure.
