On 24 October 2025, the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature visited Phanda Mzansi, a cooperative funded through the Eastern Cape Development Corporation(ECDC)-managed Imvaba Fund. The visit formed part of the Taking the Legislature to the People Programme, which promotes transparency and supports community-based development. The cooperative received R398,420 to acquire modern media production equipment.
What Happened
The visit was led by Speaker Helen Sauls-August, joined by Honourable Members Gunuza, Mjajubana, and Bonga. The session, facilitated by Vuyelwa Mantyi from DEDEAT, emphasized how provincial funding helps small enterprises grow.
Phanda Mzansi Chairperson Lonwabo Rani shared the cooperative’s story, outlining its growth, challenges, and future plans. Delegates toured the facility to see the new production equipment in action.
Official Response
Speaker Sauls-August praised Phanda Mzansi’s contribution to youth and women empowerment. “This initiative shows how community innovation and government support can work hand in hand to build a better Eastern Cape,” she said.
Officials from DEDEAT and ECDC also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting small, community-driven enterprises.
Community Impact
Phanda Mzansi employs 10 full-time staff and provides ongoing training in media production and digital storytelling. The cooperative’s mentorship programmes give young people and women valuable technical skills. Community members expressed pride in seeing local efforts recognised by the legislature.
