The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, in partnership with Nyamukara Empowerment, has launched a new provincial skills development programme to support survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). The initiative was introduced in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and aims to equip survivors with practical tools to help them regain independence and stability.

GBV continues to be one of the most urgent social issues in the province, with high levels of violence against women and children reported each year. To respond to this crisis, the programme focuses on advanced sewing and digital literacy training. These skills are expected to help participants access job opportunities, start small businesses, and strengthen their economic security.

Speaking at the launch, officials highlighted the importance of empowering survivors not only through emotional and social support but also by creating pathways to financial freedom. The training is designed to help participants rebuild their confidence while offering sustainable solutions for the future.

Community organisations and government leaders have welcomed the initiative as a step toward tackling the root causes of vulnerability and reducing the long-term impact of GBV in the Eastern Cape.
