The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development launched its Anti-Substance Abuse Festive Season Campaign today in Maletswai. The initiative targets rising alcohol and drug use as the holiday period begins. It focuses on protecting young people from underage drinking, binge drinking, and the growing “Pens Down” trend.
What Happened
MEC Bukiwe Fanta officially opened the campaign, stressing the urgent need to shield youth from harmful behaviour during the festive season. The event highlighted how alcohol and drug abuse continue to threaten the wellbeing of learners across the province.
“We must act now. Our children deserve safe spaces and stronger guidance,” Fanta said.
Moreover, the Department outlined targeted interventions that will roll out across schools, communities, and high-risk social hotspots.
Official Response
Social Development officials committed to working with families, schools, and local structures to tighten prevention efforts. They also emphasized a zero-tolerance stance on underage drinking.
A departmental representative noted, “This campaign reminds everyone that protecting our youth requires constant vigilance, especially during the festive period.”
The launch also encouraged community members to report illegal alcohol sales and unsafe gatherings involving minors.
Community Impact
Parents and youth leaders welcomed the campaign, saying it brings timely support as holiday celebrations increase. The focus on the “Pens Down” trend aims to curb unsafe parties that often lead to violence, injuries, and substance misuse.
Because the campaign promotes awareness and accountability, residents hope it will reduce risky behaviour and strengthen community safety.
