The Eastern Cape Department of Education hosted an induction for the new Provincial Quality Learning and Teaching Steering Committee today. Chaired by Professor Bongani Bantwini, the session marked a fresh push to improve education through teamwork and shared responsibility.

What Happened

The event brought together education stakeholders from schools, unions, parent bodies, and community organizations. The new committee will lead the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC), a national drive to raise education standards through cooperation and accountability.

Professor Bantwini stressed the need for unity in solving classroom challenges. “Education improvement needs all hands on deck — from educators to parents and community leaders,” he said.

In addition, the committee will identify obstacles to quality teaching and design focused interventions, especially for struggling schools.

Official Response

The Department of Education said the QLTC Steering Committee will help strengthen schools, train teachers, and ensure policies are applied effectively.

“Our aim is not only better results but a strong, lasting culture of learning and teaching,” said a spokesperson. “We want to empower teachers and inspire learners to succeed.”

Moreover, the department emphasized that the initiative aligns with its broader plan to promote excellence and inclusivity in education.

Community Impact

The campaign is expected to deepen trust and teamwork between schools and communities. Parents and local groups will, therefore, play a more active role in supporting schools and tracking progress.

Experts have praised the move as an important step toward building a more inclusive and high-performing education system. As a result, the province hopes to see stronger schools, better outcomes, and greater community pride in education.
