The annual Eastern Cape Information Technology and Computer Science (EC ITCS) Student Competition kicks off on 15 October at the RRC Hall, hosted by PE College. Running from 15 to 17 October, the event brings together top IT and Computer Science students from eight TVET colleges across the province to compete, collaborate, and celebrate digital innovation.
WHAT HAPPENED
All eight Eastern Cape TVET colleges have joined forces for the 2025 EC ITCS Student Competition, a regional event supported by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) Regional Office. The competition highlights student excellence in coding, networking, data analytics, and digital innovation.
This year’s edition marks a key moment in promoting skills development and collaboration among young tech talents. It serves as a platform for students to present real-world solutions and showcase how TVET institutions contribute to South Africa’s growing digital economy.
“We’re proud to host this competition, not only to celebrate student brilliance but also to drive innovation and teamwork across the province,” said a PE College representative.
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Organizers emphasized that the EC ITCS Competition reflects a shared commitment by all Eastern Cape TVET colleges to prepare students for the future of work. The DHET Regional Office reaffirmed its support for initiatives that blend academic excellence with hands-on technological practice.
“This event embodies the spirit of partnership and progress,” said a DHET official. “It strengthens our efforts to produce graduates who are both creative and job-ready in the ICT sector.”
Participants are expected to compete across categories focused on coding challenges, cybersecurity simulations, and emerging technologies such as AI integration and cloud computing.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
The competition’s impact extends beyond the classroom. By connecting colleges across the province, it fosters collaboration, inspires innovation, and encourages students to pursue careers in tech-driven industries. Local tech companies and recruiters are also expected to attend, creating new pathways for student internships and employment.
Gqeberha’s hosting of the event further boosts the city’s reputation as a hub for youth empowerment and digital education in the Eastern Cape.
