As October, the birth month of Oliver Reginald Tambo, unfolds, South Africans across the country have come together to celebrate his life and legacy. From musical festivals to marathon tributes, communities continue to honor the late struggle icon’s enduring influence on unity, education, and nation-building.
What Happened?
2025 commemorations included the O.R. Tambo Choral Music Festival, held on18 October 2025, at Lusikisiki College of Education. Choirs from across the O.R. Tambo District competed for a chance to represent the region at provincial level.
The event also paid tribute to late local music legends Mr. Ngqobe and Mr. Biata, who were recognized for their lifelong contributions to choral music in Mpondoland and beyond.
Hundreds of athletes gathered for the Tambo Marathon, hosted by the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality on 26 October 2025. Runners from across the Eastern Cape, including Ngquza Hill, took part to celebrate the spirit of resilience and determination that defined Tambo’s leadership.
Meanwhile, the O.R. Tambo District Municipality organized a series of events culminating in a memorial lecture at Walter Sisulu University, reflecting on Tambo’s leadership and commitment to education.
Official Response
Speaking during the official commemoration held in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, where Tambo was laid to rest, several mayors from the Eastern Cape—including Councilor. Mesuli Ngqondwana of O.R. Tambo District, Councilor. Pepping of Ngquza Hill, and Councilor. Mafumbatha of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Municipality—attended the ceremony.
Councilor. Ngqondwana said the occasion was not only to remember Tambo’s legacy but also to challenge leaders to emulate his values.
“We are humbled to be part of this national moment of remembrance. O.R. Tambo’s life reminds us that leadership must always be rooted in service, compassion, and unity,” he said.
Community impact
Across Mpondoland, the celebrations drew residents, youth, and artists together in a shared spirit of pride. Choirs, runners, and students all contributed to the festivities, showing how Tambo’s values continue to inspire generations.
Many participants described the events as an emotional reminder of Tambo’s deep love for culture—especially music—and his dedication to education and equality.
