Eastern Cape holds first ever local music awards

Six people received each R300 000 including the music legend Sizwe Zako.

“Six Eastern Cape artists have received R300 000 each from the department. This forms part of the Music Excellence Acceleration Program aimed at supporting musicians and music producers in developing and recording their works. A call was made in March for applications, and today we celebrate and wish the successful applicants all the best. To those who have not made it this time around, we are coming to you too”. These were the words of the happy MEC of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and culture in the Eastern Cape.

She further said that this initiative will be every year from now on and the prizes will be at least R1m per winning artist. The Music Excellence Acceleration Program started in May 2020, and the results were finalized on the eighth of August. Six people received each R300 000 including the music legend Sizwe Zako. MEC Nkomonye added that these awards are for Eastern Cape local artists and everyone is eligible to apply to be nominated as long as they are locally produced and recorded.

The music legend Sizwe Zakho expressed his gratitude on behalf of the recognition of all the artists and the industry in the Eastern Cape. He also urged parents to grow young talent to make sire it blossoms and is not taken advantage of.

“I have seen young talent being robbed of their craft and taken advantage of in various way. Parents must protect the growing talent of their children, attend record sessions and make it a point that the child does realise the treasure that they possess”
