The Eastern Cape Health Department has affirmed its commitment to upholding principles of good governance and transparency in the wake of the arrest of Sizwe Kupelo, its Deputy Director of Communications.
Kupelo, whose bail was set at R30,000 by the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court, faces charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering. These charges stem from allegations regarding the falsification of his matric certificate in 2001 and 2002, purportedly for securing roles including Communication Liaison Officer and his current position within the Department.
In response to inquiries, Mkhululi Ndamase, spokesperson for Health MEC, emphasized,
“This has evolved into a criminal matter overseen by the elite crime-fighting unit. The department refrains from further commentary at this juncture. Nonetheless, we remain fully committed to cooperating with any investigation aimed at fortifying the integrity of the services extended to the people of the Eastern Cape.”
Notably, the state did not contest Kupelo’s bail application. Among the conditions of his release is a prohibition on tampering with witnesses, including his superior, Siyanda Manana.
In defense, Kupelo’s legal representation has labeled the charges as unfounded and driven by malice. The next court appearance is scheduled for April 30th.
