Eastern Cape football enthusiasts, especially women, are in high spirits as they celebrate the recent promotion of the University of Fort Hare in the Sasol League Championships. The coveted trophy is now making its way to the province for the very first time since the inception of the championship.
Sibabalo Feni, the team manager of the University of Fort Hare, expressed his astonishment at the team’s remarkable achievement. He mentioned that the achievement feels somewhat surreal, but the joy and excitement are palpable as the University gears up to represent the province in the upcoming season.
Reflecting on their journey, Feni commented,
We had a busy schedule as a university, and we didn’t have much time to focus solely on Sasol. While we were busy finishing the league, we transitioned directly to play varsity football. I believe that varsity football served as excellent preparation for the playoffs.
Feni went on to emphasize the immense support they received from the university throughout their journey. “Our players were exceptionally dedicated, their hunger and commitment motivated the entire technical team and myself. What truly stood out was their willingness to step out of their comfort zones, following instructions both on and off the field. The technical team ensured that everything was in place, be it on the technical or administrative front,” he added.
The University of Fort Hare’s path to success was not without challenges. They faced Royal Wizards, defeating them 4-2, and then narrowly secured victory against Lindelani Ladies with a single goal. In the final showdown, a goalless draw led to a penalty shootout, with Eastern Cape Stars emerging as the champions after winning 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
Looking ahead, Feni emphasized their top priorities for the future. “Our main focus is to strengthen the team with new players and bring in additional technical members to ensure we are fully prepared for the upcoming challenges,” he stated. He also extended his gratitude to all the supporters who stood by the team during the playoffs and announced plans for upcoming trials, with details to be communicated as soon as they are finalized.
The University of Fort Hare’s historic achievement has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the Eastern Cape’s football landscape, and the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season are reaching new heights.
