LUSIKISIKI – The trial of a police detective accused of orchestrating the murder of his wife, Zethu Mlanji, began on August 19, 2024, drawing a large crowd to the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court. Mlanji was brutally killed in February 2024 while at home with her children, in what is believed to be a targeted attack.
The victim, who was reportedly in the process of divorcing her husband, was shot in front of her children. The police investigation led to the arrest of two hitmen, one in Ngwavuma near the Swaziland border and the other in Lusikisiki. The husband, a detective in the Family, Child, and Sexual Offenses Unit, was also arrested and charged in connection with the murder.
The case has sparked outrage and grief in the community, with activist Petrus Majola expressing concern over the safety of women and the misuse of power by those meant to protect the public. The trial is set to continue on August 23, 2024, with a large turnout expected outside the court as the community seeks justice for Mlanji.
The Lusikisiki court proceedings are being closely watched, with many hoping for a swift and just resolution to this tragic case.
