The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture on 5 September 2025 commemorated World Rabies Day (WRD) in Bizana, focusing on educating communities about the dangers of rabies—a deadly disease affecting dogs, cats, and humans when bitten by infected animals.
Observed globally on September 28 each year, the 2025 event ran under the theme “ACT NOW: You, Me, Community.” The theme, promoted by the Rabies Alliance, shows both individual and collective responsibility in eliminating rabies by preventing dog-mediated transmission.
During the event, experts explained how rabies spreads, why timely vaccinations are essential, and how community involvement plays a key role in controlling the disease. Local school children actively participated, showcasing posters, songs, and short presentations on how to prevent rabies and keep families safe.
The campaign called on pet owners to vaccinate their animals regularly and seek immediate medical care in case of bites or scratches. Officials stressed that prevention remains the most effective way to save both human and animal lives from this fatal disease.
