  • Government Initiatives as a Living Tribute: Current efforts include revitalizing towns, upgrading infrastructure, creating jobs, and empowering youth and women, reflecting a commitment to democracy and progress.

On 7 September 2025, the Eastern Cape observed the 33rd commemoration of the Bhisho Massacre at the Steve Biko Centre in Ginsburg, led by Acting Premier Xolile Nqatha. The event paid tribute to the peaceful marchers who, on 7 September 1992, lost their lives while demanding dignity and justice.

In his keynote address, Acting Premier Nqatha described Bhisho as both a site of memory and a symbol of resilience. He stressed that the best way to honour the fallen is through tangible progress that restores hope and opportunity.

Nqatha outlined key initiatives underway, including revitalising towns, upgrading infrastructure, creating jobs, and empowering youth and women in agriculture and industry. He said these steps represent a living tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for democracy.

He further reminded attendees that remembrance must be paired with action. South Africa must confront inequality, gender-based violence and racism, guided by the values of Ubuntu. Protecting democracy, deepening ethical governance and preparing a new generation of leaders were presented as urgent priorities.

To families of the fallen, survivors and young people present, his message was clear: “While we cannot erase the loss of life, we honour it through action. Freedom came at a great cost; it is our duty to defend it, deepen it, and carry it forward.”
