The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has announced the deployment of 129 newly acquired police vehicles to districts across the province. The move aims to enhance frontline policing and improve community safety ahead of the festive season.
What Happened
The vehicles were officially handed over by Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, during the provincial launch of the Safer Festive Season operation in Gqeberha on 24 October.
Each district, including both urban and rural areas, received vehicles to help officers respond faster to emergencies and serve communities more effectively. The new fleet is part of a broader effort to reallocate resources and strengthen operational capacity within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Official Response
Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane welcomed the intervention, noting that mobility challenges have often limited the effectiveness of police operations.
“The additional fleet will go a long way in addressing the transport shortages that have constrained policing, particularly in remote areas,” said Premier Mabuyane.
He added that the initiative supports government’s commitment to safer communities and improved service delivery throughout the Eastern Cape.
Community Impact
The rollout has been met with optimism from residents and community safety structures who believe the move will enhance visible policing and reduce crime rates.
With improved access to vehicles, officers can now patrol wider areas, respond swiftly to incidents, and ensure greater public protection — especially as the province enters the festive season.
