The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene was honored at a moving ceremony at the Summit Lifestyle Centre in East London. As she prepares to retire at the end of the month, the event combined joy and nostalgia, drawing in dignitaries, family, and friends.
Lieutenant General Mene joined the police force in 1984 as a police constable and rose through the ranks within the SAPS. After serving as a Station Commander for different police stations and a cluster commander at Worceste, she was appointed as the Eastern Cape Provincial Commisioner on the 1st of December 2021, taking the reigns from Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, who joined the SAPS national office. She holds a B-Tech degree in Policing from the Tshwane University of Technology.
Among attendees were the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Hon. Xolile Nqatha, and National Commissioner General Masemola, who lauded Mene’s impactful leadership. “She is a strong woman who led with tenacity during challenging times of crime in the Eastern Cape,” Nqatha emphasized, highlighting her dedication to ensuring justice and building trust within communities. “We wish her well in this new chapter of her life,” he added warmly.
As the evening unfolded, gifts poured in for the beloved commissioner, showcasing the affection and respect felt by her colleagues and loved ones. Notable among the presents was a beautifully framed sword and a modern refrigerator kindly donated by the Eastern Cape SAPS members, symbolizing their gratitude.
In her emotional reply, Lt. Gen. Mene expressed deep appreciation for the support she received throughout her career. “I will always carry the blue badge in my heart,” she stated, thanking General Masemola for his mentorship and acknowledging the solidarity she felt from those around her despite the hurdles faced by the police force.
The event was not only a celebration of her accomplishments but a testament to her legacy, leaving a lasting impact on the Eastern Cape community. As she embarks on her retirement journey, the echo of her dedication and commitment to SAPS will resonate for years to come.
