The Department of Social Development (DSD) hosted a Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) community dialogue in Polokwane on 9 December 2025. The session brought residents, stakeholders and government teams together to discuss urgent responses to rising GBVF cases across the country.
The dialogue follows the recent declaration of GBV as a national disaster, a move that shows the need for coordinated action and stronger support systems for survivors.
Community Engagement Under the 16 Days of Activism Campaign
The event forms part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. This year’s theme, “Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls Working Together to End Gender-Based Violence and Femicide,” calls on communities to unite against violence.
DSD officials encouraged residents to examine the roles they can play in prevention, early intervention and survivor support. They said lasting change requires collaboration between families, traditional leaders, faith groups, civil society and government.
A Call for Collective Responsibility
Participants discussed barriers to reporting, limited access to services and the impact of GBVF on children and vulnerable households. Officials said dialogues like this help communities understand available support and strengthen partnerships to protect women and children.
