The Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) is making strides towards job creation and local business promotion in OR Tambo District. On December 11, 2024, the department awarded 17 clothing and textile enterprises with industrial machines and overlockers during a ceremony at the Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (TARDI) in Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality.
This investment of over R500,000 is part of DRDAR’s broader initiative to support small businesses across the province. Since 2017, the department has invested over R25 million in the clothing and textile sector, with a strong emphasis on empowering women and fostering sustainable livelihoods.
At the handover ceremony, MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe highlighted the critical role of women in entrepreneurship. “We are here to liberate you. Women often face gender-based violence due to financial dependence. You should not feel trapped in abusive relationships because of financial fears,” she stated passionately. Kontsiwe encouraged the beneficiaries to expand their businesses and create more job opportunities, expressing hope that they would draw in others to strengthen their enterprises.
One of the grateful recipients, Bongiwe Mbo, shared her journey from starting with a single domestic machine to owning a small textile business that now employs four people. “These new machines will allow me to further expand and hire even more,” she beamed.
Zamile Madyibi, DRDAR’s Director for OR Tambo District, echoed the commitment to enhancing the clothing and textile industry as a key driver of employment.
