Drakensburg FC hosted a vibrant Football Roadshow on Saturday, drawing hundreds of supporters, youth groups, and community leaders to the heart of Matatiele. The initiative aimed to bring fans closer to the club and build lasting connections with local stakeholders.
Organizers said the roadshow was designed not only to promote the regional league team, which competes in the Eastern Cape Regional Football League, but also to foster a stronger sense of identity and community pride.
“This initiative is not just about football — it’s about inspiring our youth, uniting communities, and forming partnerships that will position Drakensberg FC as a symbol of pride and development across the region,” said a municipal representative.
Stakeholder engagement boosts club’s future
The day also featured a dedicated Stakeholder Engagement Session, attended by sponsors, government officials, and community leaders. Attendees discussed ideas to ensure the club’s long-term growth and sustainability.
Drakensburg FC General Manager Lehlohonolo Lebenya said community involvement is central to the club’s vision.
“We want our supporters to feel seen, heard, and part of the journey,” Lebenya said. “This is more than building a team; it’s about creating a movement that reflects Matatiele’s hopes and ambitions.”
Voices from the community
Local youth were particularly inspired by the initiative.
“I’ve always dreamed of playing professionally, and seeing Drakensburg FC here motivates me to work harder,” said 16-year-old midfielder Siyabonga Ndlovu, who attended the roadshow with his school football team.
Community leader Nomvula Gasa added, “The club’s presence gives our youth hope and a reason to stay focused. It’s a huge boost for the area.”
Building a legacy through sport
Beyond football, Drakensburg FC’s roadshow seeks to tackle youth unemployment, promote healthy lifestyles, and bring communities together. The initiative signals the club’s intent to use sport as a tool for development and empowerment.
As the roadshow ended, the message was clear: Drakensburg FC is not just a football team, but a source of pride for Matatiele, and its success will be built on collective effort.
