The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture has delivered new water infrastructure and production support to farming communities in Nqanqarhu (Maclear). The initiative brings long-awaited relief to vegetable growers who battled with irrigation challenges. On 18 November 2025, MEC Nonkqubela Kontsiwe also extended support to women-led enterprises in Joe Gqabi by handing over industrial sewing machines.
What Happened
Farmers in Nqanqarhu celebrated the official handover of spring water projects, production inputs, and gardening tools. The upgrades form part of the Ilima/Letsema Lokulima Programme, a provincial initiative that encourages communities to use available arable land for food production.
Local farmers said the new infrastructure will strengthen crop quality and improve year-round vegetable production. Many described the support as a major boost after months of struggling with unreliable irrigation systems.
Official Response
MEC Kontsiwe led the handover, expressing confidence that the investment will increase food security and stimulate local economic activity. “This support helps our farmers grow more and earn more. It is part of our commitment to strengthen rural communities,” she said.
While visiting Lower Tsitsana, MEC Kontsiwe handed over 32 industrial sewing machines to local women. The machines included both overlockers and straight-stitch units. Sixteen women-led enterprises from three Joe Gqabi municipalities received the equipment.
She stressed the need to support small enterprises. She said the machines will help women grow their businesses. They will also create stable income opportunities.
Community Impact
Farmers expect immediate improvement in irrigation reliability, crop yields, and household food supply. The investment also strengthens cooperative farming groups in the area.
In Joe Gqabi, the new sewing machines are set to boost local manufacturing, support township and village seamstresses, and help more families earn an income through small-scale production.
