The Digital News Transformation Fund (DNTF) has apologised for a fresh delay in releasing the names of its first funding cohort. The fund says it is finalising ratification processes and verifying that all documentation meets its policy requirements. A board meeting scheduled for today is expected to determine the next steps.
What Happened
The DNTF confirmed that it has not yet announced the successful applicants for its first round of grants.
According to the statement, the fund is completing the “remaining ratifications” and ensuring all documents comply with its funding policy.
The fund acknowledged the delay and expressed regret for the prolonged wait experienced by applicants.
Official Response
The DNTF said a board meeting will take place on 19 November 2025, after which the organisation expects will move forward with the announcement.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure a fair and well-governed process,” the statement read.
The DNT Fund is a partnership between Google and the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), managed by Tshikululu Social Investments. It provides project-based grants to support digital transformation, audience development, and revenue growth for South Africa’s small and medium-sized independent news publishers.
Community Impact
The delay affects dozens of independent publishers waiting for support aimed at strengthening digital operations and improving sustainability in public-interest journalism.
The fund emphasizes that decisions are guided by an independent board and that neither Google nor AIP has decision-making authority.
