Deputy Minister of Tourism, Hon. Makhotso Maggie Sotyu,

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Hon. Makhotso Maggie Sotyu, addressed the African Chinese Women Association Gala at the Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre, emphasizing the importance of women’s empowerment in tourism and the strengthening of South Africa-China relations.

In her keynote speech, Deputy Minister Sotyu acknowledged the longstanding ties between South Africa and China, noting the integral role of the Chinese community in the country’s cultural and economic landscape since the 1800s. She described the event as a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship and an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of African and Chinese women in business and development.

Empowering Women in the Tourism Industry

Sotyu underscored tourism as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and cultural exchange, with women making up the majority of the workforce in the sector. She highlighted the Department of Tourism’s commitment to gender equity through various initiatives, including:

  • Cultural Immersion Programme for Tourist Guides: Launched in October 2024, this initiative aims to equip South African guides with skills to provide meaningful experiences to Chinese visitors, enhancing cultural exchange and service excellence.
  • Mandarin Language Programme: Since 2019, South African tourist guides have been trained in Mandarin, with many successfully passing the Hanyu Shuipin Kaoshi (HSK) exams. In October 2024, 22 guides traveled to China for advanced training.
  • Trusted Tour Operator Scheme: This initiative simplifies visa applications for Chinese travelers, making South Africa a more accessible destination and boosting inbound tourism.

Women in Tourism Programme and Economic Opportunities

Recognizing the challenges faced by women in the tourism industry—such as limited access to funding and leadership roles—Sotyu highlighted the Women in Tourism Programme, which focuses on:

  • Personal development training
  • Competitive business strategies
  • Capacity building and mentorship
  • Business management training for women-owned enterprises

The Department of Tourism’s Business Management Training and Mentorship Programme has already supported 225 women-owned SMMEs across South Africa, providing crucial resources to help them thrive in the sector.

G20 Summit: A Platform for Women in Tourism

Sotyu emphasized the upcoming G20 Summit in Johannesburg this November as a major opportunity for women entrepreneurs in tourism. With increased demand for accommodation, cultural experiences, and tour services, women-led businesses are encouraged to position themselves through innovation, collaboration, and strategic marketing.

“This summit is not just an event—it is an opportunity for women in tourism to showcase South Africa’s rich offerings, forge global partnerships, and drive long-term business growth,” Sotyu stated.

Strengthening South Africa-China Tourism Ties

Concluding her address, the Deputy Minister reaffirmed the importance of strengthening South Africa’s tourism ties with China. This involves investments in language training, market research, and infrastructure improvements to enhance visitor experiences.

“Tourism and trade are powerful bridges between our nations. By working together, government, private sector, and civil society can ensure South Africa remains a top destination for Chinese travelers while creating economic opportunities for women and communities,” she said.

The gala dinner celebrated ongoing collaboration and laid the foundation for future partnerships between African and Chinese women in business and tourism.
