It was on the 5th of December 2013, when the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 after a prolonged respiratory infection.
Yesterday, the former president is remembered for selflessly fighting for equality and justice.
It is reported that the Nelson Mandela Foundation has planned various events to honour and remember his legacy.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO, Hello Hatang says that they remembering the 9th anniversary of the death of Madiba by planting trees and starting vegetable gardens. He says they are doiyso with children around Riverlea in Johannesburg.
The council of the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha, Eastern Cape also commemorated the 9th anniversary of Madiba’s death by continuing to encourage young people in the province to use the values of Madiba to improve their lives.
According to the chairperson of the museum, Dr Nomvuselo Songelwa, promoting Mandela’s values is one of the ways of fighting the injustices that the country is faced with.
“It was exactly nine years ago since he passed on and we know that the entire world collapsed into feeling a sense of sadness because of his passing. We are celebrating today because we feel it is important to continue protecting, preserving and promoting the values that he stood for”, said Dr Songelwa.
