The death toll in the Eastern Cape has risen to nine, following two days of relentless rain, severe flooding, and gale-force winds that have devastated parts of the province — particularly the OR Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities.
According to the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, several communities have been displaced, while a school bus carrying children remains missing after being swept away by floodwaters. The multi-disciplinary emergency team suspended the search last night and resumed it this morning.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address our province during this difficult time,” said Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, who has deployed Members of the Executive Council (MECs) to support response efforts on the ground.
In Amathole District, over 200 residents from Sikiti Informal Settlement were relocated to A.B. Bam Primary School, while Butterworth Town Hall now shelters hundreds from Eugene and Zithulele informal settlements. Critical infrastructure, including the Butterworth Water Treatment Works, was submerged, causing a water production halt.
Hot meals and essential supplies are being provided by SASSA, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development and local municipalities.
The Joint Operations Centre (JOC) continued to coordinate relief and response efforts across affected areas. Premier Mabuyane visited the OR Tambo District Municipality on Wednesday morning.
