Walter Sisulu University (WSU) says data now shapes every stage of the academic journey. Director of Academic Planning, Francis Kwahene, delivered this message during a virtual presentation focused on the role of evidence-based planning across the institution.
“The data we’re talking about impacts the entire value chain,” he said. “From before students enter the institution, to when they are here, and even when they graduate.”
Kwahene said data ensures WSU’s programmes remain responsive and equip students with relevant skills for the future.
Technology and AI Are Now Essential Tools
Kwahene noted that technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are no longer optional.
He described them as critical tools for supporting students, improving planning, and helping the university stay competitive.
He explained that academic planning works hand-in-hand with institutional research and the Directorate for Learning and Teaching (DLT), which he called “the engine” of the university.
Tracking Performance and Identifying Challenges
Data helps WSU track enrolment, student progression, and course performance.
Kwahene said knowing where students struggle allows faculties to design targeted support.
At faculty level, teams rely on data to understand staff profiles, qualifications, research output, and programme needs. This ensures each qualification remains viable and aligned to WSU’s strategic goals.
Ambitious Postgraduate Growth Target
WSU plans to double its postgraduate enrolments by 2030. Kwahene said this requires clear knowledge of faculty capacity, staffing, and programme mix.
“All of this planning must be rooted in accurate, actionable data,” he said.
Risks and the Need for Strong Data Governance
Kwahene warned of risks such as inaccurate data, privacy issues, and fragmented information systems. However, he said that when synthesised correctly, data becomes one of the university’s strongest assets.
“Data is the bedrock for enhancing academic quality. It allows us to respond to real facts, not opinions,” he noted.
WSU Looks Ahead
WSU believes that data-driven planning will help it respond to current academic needs while preparing for the demands of a rapidly changing society.
The university aims to produce graduates who are ready for future labour markets and national development priorities.
