  • Calls for Transparency in NSFAS Legal Review: The Democratic Alliance (DA) urges the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to disclose complete details about its ongoing legal review into student accommodation management and third-party partnerships.
  • Criticism of the Timing and Transparency of the Review: The DA criticizes the review as being delayed and lacking transparency, with concerns about its scope, duration, and the identity of those conducting it, raising questions about its effectiveness and intent.
  • Impact on Students Due to Accommodation Issues: The DA highlights the suffering of students who faced evictions and unsafe housing conditions due to delays or missing payments before the review was announced.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to fully disclose details of its recently announced legal review into student accommodation management and third-party partnerships.

While the DA welcomed the move, it said the review came “far too late” for the thousands of students who have already suffered evictions, unsafe housing, and academic disruption due to delayed or missing accommodation payments.

The party described the review as an implicit admission of systemic failure, yet criticised NSFAS for withholding critical information such as the review’s scope, start date, duration, and who is conducting it. The DA also questioned whether the findings and recommendations would be made public and when concrete outcomes could be expected.

To secure answers, the DA has submitted urgent Parliamentary Questions demanding NSFAS reveal the full scope, timeline, appointing authority, and reporting process for the review.

“If this process is genuine and not simply a stalling tactic, NSFAS should have no hesitation in committing to full openness and accountability,” the DA said, stressing that public funds must be used to secure safe, quality student housing rather than vanish into ineffective systems.
