A suspect has been shot and killed during an SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU) operation near Libode on Friday 9 January 2026. The man allegedly opened fire on officers after being intercepted along the R61 in the Corana area.

What Happened

A suspect was fatally shot on Friday, 9 January 2026, after allegedly opening fire on members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) National Intervention Unit (NIU) during an operation in the Corana location, near Libode.

Police say the unit was acting on intelligence about an individual suspected of possessing illegal firearms. The suspect’s vehicle was identified on the R61 East route during a planned interception.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect reportedly opened fire. SAPS members returned fire, resulting in the suspect being fatally wounded.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) declared the suspect dead at the scene.

Official Response

Police have confirmed that two illegal firearms were recovered from the scene. The Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) processed the crime scene.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified, as required by law, due to the fatal outcome of the operation.

Community Impact

The incident has taken place near a major route used by commuters between Corhana and Libode. No bystanders or officers were reported injured during the exchange of gunfire.
