A couple appeared in the Protea Magistrates’ Court in connection with the rape and murder of their 4-year-old child. The father faces charges of murder, rape, compelled rape, child abuse, and assault, while the mother is charged separately with failing to report a sexual offence against a minor.
The father was arrested on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, after Eldorado Park police received a report following the circulation of a disturbing video in which the child can be heard screaming while being assaulted. Investigations later led to the arrest of the mother, who is alleged to have known about the assault but did not alert authorities, as required under the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act 32 of 2007.
According to reports, a neighbour heard the child screaming from the couple’s home and, on arrival, found the father allegedly beating the child. The neighbour recorded the incident, and the video was widely shared, prompting police to respond to the scene.
Both accused remain in custody and will return to court on 18 August 2025 for bail applications. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has expressed serious concern over the increasing number of cases where parents are accused of killing or abusing their children.
