Two foreign nationals Daniel Thegabu Weldekidan (42) and his spouse Yirgalem Gebremichael Melese (42) appeared before Aliwal North Magistrate’s court on 08 January 2025. The pair was arrested by the Hawk’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation in a joint efforts with Khowa K9 and Aliwal North Public Order Police for possession of drugs, unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 07 January 2025.
A multi-disciplinary team received information on 07 January 2025 at about 21:30, about a certain residence at Zwelitsha location in Aliwal North suspected to be in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The joint team followed up the information which led them to the aforesaid residence. On their arrival, the police found the suspects inside the house and requested to search the premises. Upon searching, the team recovered a 9mm pistol with live rounds of ammunition inside their bedroom and were seized. Search continued where the police also found a bunch of KHAT drug at the dining room and it was also confiscated.
The couple appeared before Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on 08 January 2025 and the matter was remanded to 24 January 2025 for interpreter. Both suspects are remanded in custody.
