A female con artist who duped her victims into believing she was a legitimate businesswoman has been sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment in North West.

Nachy Britz, 29, was sentenced by the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday after being found guilty of two counts of fraud.

According to the Hawks, it is believed that between 2016 and 2018, Britz defrauded her unsuspecting victims of a substantial sum of money, amounting to over R3.7 million.

Britz reportedly tricked the victims into believing she was a legitimate businesswoman who imports luxury vehicles from the United States of America at an affordable cost. The victims fell for her schemes and expressed interest in some of the vehicles she presented to them.

“One victim paid Britz over R2.9 million to import Ford Mustangs and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Another victim, who entered into a business partnership with her, paid over R800 000,00 to import the vehicles,” the North West Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula said.

He stated that the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime unit investigated Britz and discovered that she had created multiple email accounts to communicate with the victims, providing them with progress reports about the importation of the vehicles.

“After failing to fulfil her promise, she was confronted by the victims who demanded their monies back. Britz only managed to pay back some complainants who have since dropped the charges against her. She, however, failed to pay back two victims, whom she still owes R2.9 million and R800 000,00, respectively,” said Mathebula.

Following Hawks’ investigation, Britz was arrested and prosecuted. She was sentenced to 15 years in jail for both counts. However, the court ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, and she is expected to serve 15 years behind bars.
