In Mbodleni Location, KwaBhaca, Ward 27, concerns are arising over a high school teacher’s methods of disciplining male students at Mbodleni Senior Secondary School. A video has surfaced, showing the teacher using a pipe to reprimand students.
It is a common belief that students can be mischievous and unruly when not under the watchful eye of their parents. Teachers often find themselves tasked with guiding them towards the right path. In this instance, a student captured the teacher in the act while attempting to restore order.
The question of how to properly raise and educate children is a complex one. Some argue that stern discipline, including physical correction, is necessary to instill respect and obedience. However, the Department of Education strongly opposes such methods, advocating for students to feel comfortable and safe in their school environment.
In response to this incident, the Department of Education has launched an inquiry to delve deeper into the circumstances that led to the teacher’s use of physical discipline.
While some students view the teacher’s actions as necessary for maintaining order and ensuring academic focus, others see it as excessive. One student stated, “I don’t see anything wrong with what the teacher was doing because he is the one who keeps all students on the right track and focused on their schoolwork.”
Conversely, some parents express satisfaction when their children receive discipline at school, as they believe it contributes to improved academic performance.
Times have changed, and so have disciplinary practices. In the past, students would face various forms of punishment, including physical discipline, detention, or scolding for misbehavior. However, modern students have the right to report mistreatment to the authorities, particularly if they believe their rights are being violated.
A concerned parent shared their perspective:
“While it may have been wrong for the teacher to resort to such punishment, children come from diverse backgrounds with different rules at home. At school, it’s essential to establish a common set of rules.”
On social media, another parent expressed their hope that the Eastern Cape Department of Education will address the matter, describing the incident as “cruel, inhumane, and a blatant violation of human rights, regardless of any justifications.”
Notably, Mbodleni Senior Secondary School has earned a reputation as one of the top educational institutions in KwaBhaca, achieving a remarkable 97.3% pass rate in 2021 and 93% in 2022.
