A 28-year-old man was arrested on 7 June 2025 in Ngcoya, Lusikisiki, after allegedly raping an 80-year-old woman and falling asleep at the scene.
According to reports, the elderly woman was sleeping with her grandchildren, the oldest being just eight years old, when she noticed the suspect already inside her home around 4:00 a.m. The man reportedly threatened her and committed the assault before falling asleep.
The victim was able to alert her neighbours, who responded quickly. Upon finding the suspect asleep, they restrained him and waited for the police to arrive. The suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with rape.
Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, commended the community for their swift and calm response. He encouraged residents to continue working closely with law enforcement to ensure safety in their communities.
