Communities in Wards 23 and 24 of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality (WMMLM) have welcomed government plans for the construction of Greenville Hospital following consultative meetings held on Tuesday, 2 September 2025.

The sessions, hosted at Jericho Community Hall in Ward 23 and Ebenezer Community Hall in Ward 24, were attended by representatives from WMMLM, the Eastern Cape Department of Health, and the Department of Public Works. The purpose was to update residents on the hospital project and outline how local communities stand to benefit.

Job Creation and SMME Development

Central to the presentations were details about job opportunities and support for small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). Officials emphasised that the project is not only aimed at improving access to healthcare but also at driving local economic development in Bizana.

Community Engagement

Residents were given the opportunity to raise questions and provide input on how best the project could be implemented. Many expressed support and shared suggestions on ensuring that all involved communities work together for the success of the development.

Next Steps

Municipal officials confirmed that additional consultations will be held in other affected wards. A broader meeting with all wards may also be convened to finalise an inclusive approach to distributing the project’s socio-economic benefits.

The Greenville Hospital project is being positioned as a key development in improving healthcare services while boosting economic activity in the surrounding areas.
