Communities Urged to Reject Vigilantism Amid Rising Violence

Date:

In recent weeks, South Africa has been rocked by two horrifying incidents of vigilantism, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for urgent action from law enforcement authorities. The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has stepped forward to denounce these acts of violence, emphasizing the need for community cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

In a strongly worded statement, Mlindeni Sibango, UDM Spokesperson on Safety, Security, and Defence, voiced the party’s outrage over the brutal acts witnessed in both the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces. Two separate incidents, one near Peddie and the other in Manavhela village, have shocked the nation and underscored the grave consequences of taking the law into one’s own hands.

Near Peddie in the Eastern Cape, five individuals faced a horrifying fate, brutally beaten, hacked, and burned to death after being accused of cattle theft. The Peddie community, frustrated by what they perceive as inadequate police efforts to combat stock theft, succumbed to vigilantism out of desperation. Concerns have been raised regarding potential collusion between police officers and thieves, exacerbating the issue in rural communities heavily reliant on livestock for sustenance and livelihood.

Similarly, in Manavhela village in the Vuwani area of Limpopo, a suspected criminal met a tragic end at the hands of a mob after allegedly raping two women, one of whom lost her life. While gender-based violence remains a pressing concern, the UDM emphasizes that vigilantism cannot be condoned as a solution.

The UDM underscores the pervasive criminality plaguing South African communities, including theft, rape, and murder. However, resorting to extreme acts of violence is not the answer.

Police Minister Bheki Cele is urged to address the failures within his department promptly. The lack of safety and security not only endangers citizens but also hampers economic growth by deterring tourists and investors. The UDM advocates for the establishment of a comprehensive civil order system, bolstered by necessary resources and support, emphasizing the importance of coordination between ministries responsible for justice, police, correctional services, defence, and national intelligence.

SAPS is called upon to actively engage communities in crime prevention efforts, including the establishment of properly resourced neighborhood watches. Enhancing police capabilities through comprehensive training, structural reform, and technological advancements is deemed crucial in combating rising criminality.

The UDM issues a stern warning to the South African public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of cooperation with law enforcement agencies and reporting suspected criminal activities. Engaging in vigilantism only serves to exacerbate the problem further, leading to potential arrest and prosecution.

As South Africa grapples with escalating violence and crime, the UDM urges all citizens to stand united against vigilantism and work together towards a safer, more secure society.
