Illegal firearms recovered in OR Tambo district

Major General Modishana, the OR Tambo District Commissioner, has praised the pledge of police officers as they increase their campaign against illegal firearms. This commendation follows the recent arrests of three suspects linked to unlicensed weapons, showcasing the ongoing fight to reclaim safety in the region.

On May 7, 2025, at the Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court, 69-year-old Mgxekwa Dlavunge Amos was released on warning after being apprehended at his home in Ntimbini A/A under the Nyandeni Local Municipality. He faces charges for possessing an unlicensed shotgun and ammunition, with his case postponed to June 5 for further investigation.

In a separate incident on the same day, an outstanding turn of events unfolded when a group of local learners apprehended a 25-year-old man attempting to rob them of their belongings. During the scuffle, the courageous students managed to seize a revolver and ammunition from the would-be thief. The man faces charges for possession of an unlicensed firearm and is set to appear at the Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court on May 8.

Also on May 7, police in Lusikisiki arrested a 45-year-old man found with 68 rounds of ammunition at his homestead in Ntafufu Location, under Ingquza Hill Local Municipality sector. This suspect is additionally linked to an attempted murder case and is scheduled to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on May 8.

“We are diligently working to rid the OR Tambo District of illegal firearms,” said Major General Modishana.
