Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA), in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and Groundstone Farm, has launched a sustainable farming initiative to strengthen food and water security across Limpopo. The project, which coincides with World Water Day observed on 22 March, aims to establish thriving community gardens in areas where Coke Ville solar-powered boreholes have been installed — including Makhushaneng, Tshikota, and Ga Ramoshwana.
The initiative includes the provision of gardening equipment, vegetable seeds, seedlings, and water infrastructure to community members, with a strong emphasis on long-term sustainability. Through mentorship, training workshops, and access-to-market strategies such as off-taker agreements with retailers, beneficiaries will be empowered to produce food for consumption and sell surplus for income.
Dr Phokele Maponya from the ARC emphasized that the initiative reflects the principles of the Water-Energy-Food nexus — a framework that acknowledges the interconnectedness of basic resources.
“The provision of clean water will go a long way in enabling the communities to produce food for themselves and sell surplus. Schools and creches are already benefiting, and informal market participation is underway,” he said.
As part of the roll-out, partners conducted soil analysis, distributed seeds, and assessed farming potential at the identified sites. The programme is tailored to support food resilience at the household level, particularly in regions where food insecurity is a growing concern.
Mr Dibesho Serage, Managing Director of Groundstone Farm, highlighted the empowerment aspect of the project. “Access to clean water and food security are fundamental to community well-being. This partnership empowers communities with knowledge and skills that will foster self-sufficiency and create lasting impact,” he said.
Beneficiaries in the targeted communities welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, receiving essential supplies and committing to using the resources effectively. Photos from the handover events show community members from Makhushaneng, Tshikota, and Ga Ramoshwana celebrating with their new equipment.
The project forms part of CCBSA’s broader strategy to invest in water stewardship and community development, in alignment with their commitment to ethical, inclusive, and sustainable business practices. As a Level 1 B-BBEE company operating 13 manufacturing facilities nationwide, CCBSA continues to emphasize shared value for its customers, employees, and communities.
